Anyone who knows me will tell you I am a huge believer in a great Melbourne tradition.
But it’s not watching AFL at the MCG. It’s not twilight picnics on the beach in summer or lazy lattes on our high streets (although these rituals are wonderful).
No, I am talking about residential real estate auction – street theatre at its best – held in their hundreds most weekends across this city’s suburbs.
I love that these live housing sales are unscripted, accessible to everyone and therefore often produce sale prices that are completely unpredictable.
Some people knock our state’s internationally renowned tradition claiming it creates a market pressure cooker resulting in unsuspecting buyers getting burned. I disagree.
I have spent more than 3 decades selling houses and can tell you I am yet to find a more transparent sales method than the residential street auction.
Auctions are public events – no secret deals behind closed doors here – and give both vendors and buyers fixed timeframes.
I can think of nothing more exciting when selling than hearing your auctioneer call “this property will be sold today”.
